Laser Hair Removal
The use of lasers for hair removal has been studied for a number of years. Laser light is absorbed by melanin in the hair shaft, damaging the follicular epithelium. Regrowing hairs were shown to be thinner and lighter than previously. Extensive clinical use of this high-power, laser has resulted in recommendations for patient selection and proper use of the laser. Appropriate fluence settings have been shown to cause permanent hair reduction without damaging the epidermis, regardless of skin type.
The primary principle behind laser hair removal is selective photothermolysis.
Laser treatments will permanently reduce the total number of body hairs that is why Laser hair removal has become popular because of its speed and efficacy. The initial set of treatment is between 5-8 treatments 30 days apart.
Some, after the initial set, will need touch-up treatments, especially on large areas.
What can Dr Fam do for you?
Permanent laser hair ‘reduction’ is a more accurate description. It is important to understand that hair grows in cyles. Laser affects only the new hair. Therefore, a number of laser hair removal treatments must be spread out over several months to treat most of the follicles as they enter their individual growth cycles, when the hair root is active and the melanin is available for laser heat-targeting.
Hair can be removed from the following areas with maintenance every 6 months:
- Underarms.
- Face and lips.
- Neck,Back and chest.
- Bikini area and Legs.
